Sometimes rehabs will pay for your treatment themselves through donations that they receive from their loyal donors.

To give you an idea of how alcohol treatment is paid for in the united states, I’ll go over some quick statistics covered over the years

How Is Alcohol Treatment paid for in the United States?

In 1986, it is estimated that a total of 9 billion was spent on alcohol rehabs. Of this number, about 10% was paid for out of pocket. Over 20% was paid by private insurance. About 10% was paid by Medicaid. About 10% was paid by other federal funds and about 25% was paid through state and local funds.

In 1998, 15 billion was estimated to be spent on alcohol abuse and substance abuse. Of this number, about 5% of alcohol abuse treatment was paid for out of pocket. Over 10% was paid by private insurance. About 20% was paid by Medicaid. About 15% was paid by other federal funds and about 30% was paid through state and local funds.

In 2009, it was estimated that a total of $24 billion was spent on alcohol abuse treatment and substance abuse treatment.

Of this number,

  • about 5% of alcohol abuse treatment was paid for out of pocket.
  • Over 15% was paid by private insurance.
  • About 20% was paid by Medicaid.
  • About 15% was paid by other federal funds
  • and about 30% was paid through state and local funds.

In 2020,there is estimated to be a total of 42 billion spent on alcohol abuse treatment and substance abuse treatment.

  • about 10% of alcohol abuse treatment was paid for out of pocket.
  • Over 20% will be paid by private insurance.
  • About 30% will be paid by Medicaid.
  • About 15% was paid by other federal funds
  • and about 25% was paid through state and local funds.
  • The remainder of alcohol abuse treatment will be paid for through other private means and medicare

As you can see from these statistics, your best chance at receiving alcohol abuse treatement for free is by going to a public payor. What this means is that you should seek funds from your state or, federal funding or medicare. These 3 sources of public funding account for about 70% of the alcohol abuse treatment every year.

Substance abuse prevention and treatment block grants

The substance abuse prevention and treatment block grants provided about 5% of substance abuse treatment spending in the country. The grant totaled 1.6 billion in 2013 and is distributed by the SAMHSA (substance abuse and mental health services administration). You can learn more about the SAMHSA at SAMHSA.gov.

Medicaid is also another mechanism to have your alcohol rehab for free

State and local support for Free Alcohol Rehab Centers

State and local governments provided almost a third of total spending on alcohol abuse programs. To get your alcohol treatment for free you would have to apply for some of this state funding. 7.6 billion was spent by states in 2009. If you add local Medicaid expenditures then state funding accounts for 9.4 billion in funds spent in 2009. 2.3 billion of state funding for substance abuse came from substance abuse disorder agencies. These agencies can usually be found within other agencies of a larger state department such as human services agency or mental or behavioral health agencies.

$5.3 billion of state funds spent on substance abuse in 2009 was managed by other state agencies such as corrections agencies, judiciary agencies and child protective services.
