In 2009, it was estimated that a total of $24 billion was spent on alcohol abuse treatment and substance abuse treatment.
Of this number,
- about 5% of alcohol abuse treatment was paid for out of pocket.
- Over 15% was paid by private insurance.
- About 20% was paid by Medicaid.
- About 15% was paid by other federal funds
- and about 30% was paid through state and local funds.
In 2020,there is estimated to be a total of 42 billion spent on alcohol abuse treatment and substance abuse treatment.

- About 15% was paid by other federal funds

As you can see from these statistics, your best chance at receiving alcohol abuse treatement for free is by going to a public payor. What this means is that you should seek funds from your state or, federal funding or medicare. These 3 sources of public funding account for about 70% of the alcohol abuse treatment every year.
Substance abuse prevention and treatment block grants
The substance abuse prevention and treatment block grants provided about 5% of substance abuse treatment spending in the country.
